MMPC began operation in 1997 with an intense research on the subject of slums and their rehabilitation; with its office being set up in Dharavi – Asia’s largest slums. During these years MMPC had close interactions with various stakeholders.
MMPC have evolved a strategy for slum rehabilitation focusing on HIKES – Health, Income, Knowledge, Environment and Socio- Cultural development. The strategy intends to integrate the slum dwellers with mainstream citizens and to substantially increase the income levels of the slum dwellers who in turn would contribute to the economic growth of the country.
Two most important factors for the success of this strategy are to ensure substantial increase in the income level of the slum families and to ensure that there are tangible gains for all the Stake holders.
Our strategy aims to create a creative and integrated solution for the all stakeholders. This model has been a subject of studies in many colleges and universities across the world including Harvard Business School, UC Berkely, UCL Bartlett etc. It has been a subject of discussion in the boardrooms of UN Habitat, World Bank, World Urban Forum and several such institutions. Apart from improving the conditions for housing and infrastructure, our strategy aims to make informal settlements a centre of excellence- a premier destination HIKES:
Presently, the slum dwellers of the urban centers are prone to disease on account of poor sanitation and sub-human conditions in which they are compelled to live. High quality day surgery polyclinics need to be set up encouraging better quality doctors from the rest of citizens to participate. These would include specialist in various field of medicine, providing the treatment for the needy patients. State of the art Polyclinics / Hospitals are required to be set up associating with eminent doctors / surgeons with modern medical equipment.
Adequate infrastructure must be provided in form of affordable commercial areas, cottage industrial estates, and facilities to house small industries. There must be a further provision for various institutes for upgrading the skills of the slum dwellers and taking the production standards to international levels. In addition to this, wide roads and ample parking will give a major boost to shop owners who otherwise only had to depend on local customers. Thus boosting income generation.
Most of the children living in a slum are dependent on municipal/govt. run schools which generally lacks modern infrastructure and amenities. Setting up state of the art educational institutes with all the modern infrastructure and amenities would enable the poor children to learn and become a professional. Further technical institutes such as ITI and others to impart training to the slum children is vital for the future consideration of the slum dwellers. Further, specialised training institutes imparting knowledge and training for entrepreneurship and small scale industries like ceramics, leather craft, , food processing, fashion designing, etc., can also be encouraged. This will help the children to choose their area of interest and to make a living out of the same and thus helping to convert slums into middle income communities.
Any slum when developed can become a torch bearer for eco-friendly suburbs in that city/country. In excess of 15% of open spaces, wide roads, high quality sanitation, appropriate handling of solid waste, etc, are proposed to upgrade the environment from sub-human to lush and green. MMPCPL encourages the use of eco-friendly technology as a part of the redevelopment process.
The arts are a human right and should be available to all without regard to socio-economic status. Access to a spectrum of artistic expressions and cultural experiences is crucial to the development of healthy communities and contributes to the overall academic achievement and social well-being of citizens. We believe that artistic and cultural activities are an essential component of healthy and vibrant communities. We therefore emphasize on providing open grounds, dance and drama theatres, community hall etc. for the slum dwellers.
